or 3:00 today before we see more snow move in. it will be just like yesterday. we're not talk bathe big snow event but with the very cold temperatures, every flake that falls from the sky will get a chance to stick somewhere. it will definitely be sticking out there with high temperatures not getting out of the 20s. we are forecasting highs in the 20s this afternoon. here is your winter weather advisory in effect this morning or in effect this affect at 2:00 through 9:00 this -- this affect at 2 -- this afternoon at 2:00 through 9:00 this evening. both metro areas, washington, baltimore, all the in-close counties here under the winter weather advisory starting at 2:00 p.m. today. here is the forecast. high temperatures only in the upper 20s. snow developing 2:00, 3:00 today. it will come down hard enough at times that we'll likely see

some accumulation. how much? probably about an inch. although parts of the area could get 2 inches. an outside chance of 3 inches in one or two spots. yesterday, we had a little jackpot across southern maryland. we might get that again today where some places get 2 or 3 inches. >> is that jackpot for a lot of people? >> i think yesterday, it was. i mean friday night, set yourself up for some sledding tomorrow. >> the kids are all excited. >> the dog love it. julie wright was excited about it. >> when you say jackpot, i think dollars. i don't think snow. just for the record. just so we're all on board with that. >> okay. >> right now, southbound along 270 on that dry pavement, a lot of chemical was spread out there yesterday and hopefully that will help with your drive home this evening. wiper fluid will be something that you will need and wouldn't

hurt to get a full tank of gas as well. you know, fridays are typically busy anyway. you add in the combination of some inclement weather plus the volume, it will be a long rush hour ride home. southbound 270 right now good to go out of germantown headed out towards the beltway. no issues reporteded along this stretch southbound i-95 in maryland. the incident we have has cleared. your lanes are open if you are traveling on the outer loop of the beltway coming from river road headed out to the american legion bridge. traffic flowing freely in each direction on the dulles toll road between 2 and the beltway. no trouble spots to report northbound on i-95 leaving woodbridge across the occoquan. double the double nickel continuing on 395 on the beltway trying to get past the pentagon headed for the 14th street bridge. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. now to more on this cold winter weather we are having. looks like it will last into the weekend. >> lauren demarco has a look at how our roads are getting

ready. good morning to you. >> reporter: one thing i can certainly confirm is it is very cold out here. very cold and the pavement is so cold, it is below 20 degrees. they are not salting the roads, pretreating for the anticipated snow this afternoon. so that is sort of interesting this morning. we had a couple of accidents yesterday morning around 8:30:00 a.m. on 95 in virginia near triangle. we had an accident involving a virginia state trooper and another one involving a v- d.o.t. vehicle and patrol officer. everyone involved suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. they should all be okay. you know what a mess that can create on the roads, particularly when there is snow during rush hour and that is what we are looking at for the afternoon rush today. taking a live look out there at the roads right now, nice and clear. no problems on 95. again, the highways don't appear to be pretreated at this point. one. of the neighborhood and residential roads have been treated yesterday and some of that is still around.

you will find that. the concern this morning is refreezing. d.c. will deploy about 200 plows starting this afternoon so they will be monitoring all of the major arteries and working to get things cleared out you want do want to be very careful. also want to mention for property owners, you want to clear your sidewalks and walkways of snow within about 24 hours and look out for any elderly or disabled neighbors in your area. help them out as well. julie has been mentioning you want to make sure your gas tank is filled, windshield wiper fluid and make sure you have the ice scraper in the car and charge your cell phone. >> a d.c. teen is recovering this morning and the search is on for his attackers after he was brutally salted near the rhode island avenue metro stop. 17-year-old joseph agola was jumped and robbed wednesday afternoon on his way home. he says seven guys stole his wallet in the attack. joseph suffered a broken arm and jaw. his jaw is now wired shut for

several weeks. anyone with information is asked to call d.c. police. two arrests in the gang- related murder of a prince george's teen whose killing sparked multiple fights at his high school this week. police charged a 17-year-old and 19-year-old with the killing of 16-year-old marcus jones and are still looking for a third suspect. detectives say the shooting was a result of jones confronting members of a rival gang. today is the annual march for life rally and thousands abortion opponents are expected to mark 40 years since roe vs. wade. the day ends with a rally near the supreme court. it begins with a rally at the verizon center at 7:30 this morning followed by a mass at 10:00 a.m. there will all be a rally at the comcast center in college park beginning at 7:00 p.m. a mass will follow at 9:00. coming up next, an aging system dealing with the growing population. we will tell you more about big

massachusetts senator john kerry is one step closer to becoming the county's next secretary of state. kerry had his nomination hearing before the senate foreign relations committee and addressed a number of issues. kerry had served on the foreign relations committee for nearly 30 years. he is expected to be easily confirmed by the full senate on tuesday. president obama has nominated a tough former prosecutor to head the securities and exchange commission. he has picked mary jo white. she helped put away mafia crime boss john gotti and convicted the person responsible for the world trade center bombing in 1993. white's nomination now heads to the senate. the vice president and top white house officials are heading to richmond this morning. joe biden and homeland secretary janet napolitano will

be holding a round table at virginia commonwealth university on reducing gun violence. joining them will be experts who worked on gun safety issues in the wake of the virginia tech shooting. more on a metro overhaul, the systems that thousands of people rely to get around each day is talking about going places it has never gone before. but first, let's check in with tucker barnes for the latest on the next round of winter weather. >> yeah, on the way, not this morning, don't be worried about the morning commute. it is the afternoon commute when we'll get is some snow moving in. ill a have the details on your weather and julie wright will have your traffic. we'll do it right after the break.

taking a look over washington, d.c. and kind of quiet out there right now. things are going to kind of kick up later on today, this afternoon, just in time for your morning commute, right, tuck officer. >> right. the morning commute, fine. it is the afternoon commute we're concerned about. the potential for -- my weather maps are not working. >> they may be frozen. >> the potential for maybe an inch, maybe 2 inches in a couple of spots. this is not going to be a big storm. with temperatures remaining as cold as they've been, our high

temperatures only in the upper 20s yesterday. every flake will be sticking. you can see the clipper system approaching from the west. it is not here yet. we've still got several hours until it gets here and it will be moving into some very dry air. we are not concerned with snow until i would say 2:00 or 3:00 today. let's switch back to max 2, thank you very much and there you can see the snow. 20 right now in washington. it is cold. 14 in leonardtown. 14 in gaithersburg and frederick. we are doing another day with much of the area here, temperatures in the teens. and this will set the scene for our next snow event as temperatures won't even be close to marginal here. they will be nice and cold noon here is another look. clouds moving in very quickly t will be a cloudy start to the day. i don't see a whole lot in the way of sun today. the snow arrives any time after about 2:00 or 3:00 today. you can see that -- i'll tell you that usually when we get

systems coming from west to east like this and unable to tap into atlantic moisture, it won't have a lot to work with. snow totals will be held down because of that. futurecast, put that in motion for you. here comes the snow. 2:00, you can see it is just out to the west. it will take a little bit of time here to moisten up the atmosphere. once snow starts falling, there we are at 5:00. it looks like we'll get a period of snow around here until about 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 tonight and it will quickly push off to the east. not talking about a big snow event but again, every flake will fine a place to land and to stick. how much snow? maybe an inch. perhaps 2 inches on the outside sort of upper limit here. i don't think we'll see the 4 or 5-inch totals we saw yesterday. i can't guarantee there won't be a few spots that as i mentioned earlier, the jackpot where you might get two, maybe three inches. cloudy and cold. afternoon snow developing.

winds out of the south here at five to 10. snow totals, 1 to 3 inches. there is your accu-weather seven-day forecast. most of us will get about an inch. check tut o it will feel very balmy around here with highs in the upper 50s with showers next week. that is a look at weather. late do some traffic and get the latest from julie wright who is looking very fridayish. >> not quite sure what that means. >> that means air happy festive. >> okay. all lanes are open. no problems to report in the main lines or hovs as you continue northbound headed out to the 14th street bridge. eastbound 66, traffic running at speed as well leaving manassas headed inbound towards centreville. our concern is not your morning drive but your drive home this afternoon so plan your trip accordingly. make sure you have plenty of wiper fluid because know the wipers got a workout yesterday and bridges, ramps an overpasses freeze before anything else.

take it easy. think about the drive home later on today. now, southbound 270, you are in the clear from germantown headed out towards your exits in rockville. lanes are open on the top stretch of the beltway as you commute between college park and bethesda. no problems to report trying to get past new hampshire avenue. southbound i-59 before 175 now cleared. back up to speed continuing in from columbia and jessup headed out towards laurel. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. metro has just released a sweeping plan for the future of transit in our region. among the most expensive items on the list, new underground rail lines through downtown d.c. and georgetown. john henrehan has the story. >> reporter: metro's problem in a nutshell is its popularity. our regional rail system carries about 750,000 fares a day. over the next 25 years, that is expected to grow to morning a million rider a day. even with all eight-car trains during rush hours, the central core capacity of the system will become constantly jammed.

>> where there is no longer capacity in the system, whether it is east-west, north-south, you have to split the system apart and provide additional tracks. >> reporter: metro's general manager outlined for the board that oversees the transit system a plan that calls for consideration of new underground metro tunnels in d.c. beneath 10th street northwest and beneath m street northwest. those underground lines with new tracks would include a new tunnel under the potomac river into roslyn. that opens the tantalizing possibility that georgetown could get a metro station. now, georgetown at one time had rail service. a hundred years ago, trolleys ran here and can you still see remnants of trolley tracks on some georgetown streets. the trolleys went away in the 1950s and community lead ares in georgetown were cool to the idea of a metro stop when the

system was being designed in the 1960s. attituded may have changed. >> very good for the community and the business. >> i would like it very much. it is hearted to park in many places and getting to metro would take us to national gallery, all the smithsonian plus national press club, many. the places that we go. >> reporter: dr. silverman's husband charms expressed concern over what would be years of torn-up streets in georgetown if the traditional trench format is used for constructing the proposed new underground rail lines. there are many, many other recommendations in this report including extending metrorail to bowie in maryland and to centreville and potomac mills in virginia. the plan also calls for developing priority bus corridors throughout the region as a way of moving people around in the future. we'll have a link on our web site so you can take a look at

now no i alook at what is new at the movies this weekend. >> kevin mccarthy talked to the actor from hansel and gretel. >> when you are underneath all of that make-up, did you feel more free as an actor to go as crazy as you want to be because you are covered one the fake- up. >> it was kind of a balance i had to find. on the one level, the make-up did so much for me. by the time i was done, looked at myself and whatever i could see of myself through these big

contact lenses, i thought imsea so scary, how much more scary do i need to act to this. in the past, when i played villains, you feel like you can go crazy and be big and over the top and whatever. with this one, i just thought maybe i can't do too much because i'm already so scary. the other part that was something i had to get used to is you have an army of people around you all time because literally every time you open your mouth or do something, you become unglued. so that took a little bit of the freedom away that i normal lie l.i.e. feel as an actor where can you go in between takes and you don't have to constantly think about it. the challenge was letting go of all of this stuff and just be a whole new me. >> when you sit down and watch this movie in the theater, are you able to actually engage yourself or do you criticize your own self as an actress or are you past pa point? >> i think it is really strange

to watch yourself he is personal lit first time around. and you remember things like what happened that day on a certain scene or how my nose came off during that scene. but i haven't seen this one in the theater just yet. >> if you could join any of your cinematic heroes in any of your favorite movies alongside them and be with them in a movie, what would that one movie be? >> it would have to be look a peter sellers or a jack nicholson or a -- i don't know a meryl streep or something like that. i guess it wouldn't be so action packed. >> all right. now, kevin joins us in the next hour with his review of hansel and gretel and other new movies opening up this weekend. >> a sure sign spring isn't too far away. natsfest is this saturday at the washington conference center. the team will name a fisk real estating president. it will be revealed at natsfest. who do you think should be the

way. the morning commute just fine. i think through the noon hour, we'll be just fine. it be mid afternoon before snow moves back in. we are not talking by big storm. we are taxing about a repeat performance from yesterday with maybe an inch across the area and a few spots could get a little more than that. maybe two inches. this on the scale of storms will be a small one. however, cold temperatures and with cold temperatures, there will be no issue with it sticking wherever it wants to fall. so just like yesterday, heads up that we'll do its best to stick on the roadways. there is your winter weather advisory in effect. the weather service issuing this primarily because we are expecting cold during rush hour and cold temperatures. it will stick and we'll are v. a bit of a snowpack out there. if you are looking forward to some sledding, you add an inch on top of an inch.

but be careful. nice and clear, southbound 207 in great shape leaving germantown headed out towards sav roccaville. southbound baltimore-washington parkway, authorities tell me they are checking for a crash near 410 in riverdale. here is a live picture of those chilly conditions outside this morning. officials in virginia are warning drivers to be extra careful today as the roads may be slippery. several accidents were reported on i-95 yesterday due to the weather and snow crews in the district say they are ready for whatever mother nature delivered this afternoon. the city will doe employ 200 plows and continue to treat the roads for icing conditions this morning. keep in mind, can you track the weather where you live. share your snow photos and do a lot more with the fox 5 weather app. download it on your droid, ipad or iphone. search for d.c. weather in the app store. >> you know it is cold outside. in the district, officials are already looking ahead to summer. the application process starts today for this year's summer youth employment program. the program connects d.c. residents between 14 and 21

a victory for same-sex couples in rhode island after the state house pass a gay marriage bill. it was overwhelmingly approved 51-19 and the legislation now moves to the senate where its fate is up known. rhode island is the only new england state that does not allow same-sex marriage. the senate is set to vote monday on a more than $50 billion relief bill for superstorm sandy. the bill was passed by the house last westbound and supporters say the money is urgently needed to help the hardest hit areas of new york, new jersey and connecticut. some plashing say the legislation would add to the nation's growing debt unless spending cuts are made elsewhere. women will now be able to serve in combat after pentagon chief leon panetta made it official yesterday. some front line roles could open as early as this year. but sinking in special operations including the navy seals could be a longer approval process. coming up next. >> a woman arrested after breaking into a home and then

no problems between landover and andrews. southbound baltimore-washington parkway, the incident has cleared. we have problems with metrorail this morning. the green-yellow line experiencing delays due to a switch problem at long tonight plaza. allow extra time there. southbound 270, nice and clear right now. no travel spots to report leaving germantown headed out towards the split. dulles toll road still in good shape leaving 28 for the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. >> thank you. a woman in ohio dubbed the cleaning fairy is arrested again. this time, for shoveling a snowy sidewalk in front of a stranger's house. 53-year-old susan warren is believe toed to be behind the act. now, back in may, she broke into a home, cleaned it up a bit while the home owner was upstairs sleeping. she left a $75 bill on a nap kip. she was sentenced to one-euro probation for breaking and entering. her latest act leaves some a little concerned.
